Aims
of this Course
The MSc in Steel and Composite Construction
has the aim of providing advanced education in the specialized field of
steel and composite construction, developping abilities for the performance
of functions in the sub-sector of construction related to design, production,
execution and management of construction works with steel or composite
structures.
At the
same time, this course provides the theoretical bases for a possible PhD,
and it organized according to the principles of the Bologna model.
The Post-Graduation
in Steel and Composite Construction is identical to the MSc, excluding
only the thesis.
Organization
of the Course
The course takes 2 academic years, divided in 4 semesters, including the
thesis. The Post-graduation takes 1 yeas. A number of credit units ECTS
is attributed to each course, in a total of 120 ECTS.
The first
semester is centred on essential basic aspects in the field of steel and
composite construction, without options, thus allowing to harmonize the
students' different academic studies. On the second and 3rd semesters,
the students must choose optional courses, which allow them to deepen
their knowledge in alternative scientific areas (responding to the several
market needs). Finally, the MSc thesis allows the development of skills
for an autonomous, coherent and organized work, and it is elaborated on
the third and fourth semesters.
The
offer of a wide number of lectures intends to make this course work together
with a number of other European Schools, in a network of excelence in
the field of steel and composite construction. This way it will be possible
to include the specificities of other schools in a common plan of studies
and to have professors of those schools in this MSc.
This European Network of Steel and Composite Construction includes, besides
DEC-FCTUC, the Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic),
the Luleå University of Technology (Sweden), the "Politehnica"
University of Timisoara (Romania), the Stuttgart University (Germany),
the Liége University (Belgium), University Napoli Federico II (Italy)
and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).
There
is also the support of non-European universities, as it is the case of
the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro - UERJ (Brazil). This international
interaction has already had results: a common application for an European
MSc, in the scope of the Communitariam Program ERASMUS MUNDUS, which it
is predicted to be functioning in the following year.
Schedules
Classes
and exams will be functioning in the following periods:
A – Fridays, from 09:30 to 12:45

Besides
the normal lessons, there were some actions to put the students close
to the practical reality:
-visit to the new Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto (7/10/2005
